Janjaweed Gang Rape Five Women in Darfur, Others Escape

November 16, 2005

Government aligned Janjaweed militia attacked and ganged raped five women on Wednesday, November 10, 2005, according to three different sources who communicated with the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy during the past week.

At around eight that morning a group of twenty-five women set out from the neighboring camps at Hai-el-Jebal, Aba-Zar, and Zalengi on the outskirts of Al-Geneina town in Western Darfur. They walked for about thirty minutes to an area between the villages of Ranga and Deisa where they could gather firewood and dry grass to sell for livestock.

Shortly after noon the Janjaweed attacked. The women ran, and the militia gave chase. Fortunately most of the women were able to escape into the nearby Leria Mountains, but five women were captured and savagely raped by the attackers.

The victims were taken for treatment, and the other women made it back to camp after hiding overnight in the Mountains.
