The Sudanese government is feeling the heat from the international community's increasing talk of a U.N. or NATO role in Darfur. Instead of looking for a diplomatic solution, Khartoum's ever more paranoid Arab cabal continues to make outrageous statements to the media.
The General Secretary of the Democratic Union Party, Madowi Al-Turabi, appeared on Sudanese TV on February 23, accusing the United States of using the crisis in Darfur as part of a proxy war against China to appropriate Sudan's natural resources.
The panel discussion on the SUNA television channel also included the Deputy Foreign Minister, Ahmed Karti, one of the perpetrators of the war against Darfur, and one of the most wanted alleged war criminals.
Madowi maintained that the Sudan will never allow this international intervention. Sudan will work with its friends and will rally Sudanese public opinion to oppose any move by the United Nations to send peace keepers. He shamelessly maintained that the African Union was doing a splendid job, and was preferred by all Sudanese including, astonishingly, the people of Darfur.
Madowi and Katri both stated that the slaughter in Darfur is a tribal conflict. They claimed that Sudanese government has tried to end the fighting by sending 15,000 troops to the region, but lacked the logistical ability and fire power to stop the conflict. This is an ironic claim as the Sudanese have never lacked the logistics necessary to arm the Janjaweed militias and to bomb black towns from government airplanes. Madowi further deflected the blame by accusing the international NGOs of perpetuating the crisis in Darfur to raise their profiles.
When asked by the moderator what Sudan could do if the international community decided to intervene, Madowi warned not so subtly, "We will have a solution, but I can't say it now."
