Stand Up Charlottesville Raises Nearly $10,000 for Doctors without Borders
In November 2006, Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy partnered with local Darfur activists, including Maggie Murphy and Natasha Olinger, and the University of Virginia chapter of STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur) to organize Stand Up, Charlottesville, for Darfur. This week-long series of events was aimed at raising awareness of the crisis in Darfur, mobilizing support for international intervention, and raising money for relief efforts in Darfur. The week kicked off with a benefit concert at the Charlottesville High School Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center. The featured performers were Azouhouni Adou and the AfroYorkers, as well as a group of Darfuris who performed traditional dances and songs. Thanks to support from MusicToday, the organizers were able to donate nearly all ticket proceeds to Doctors Without Borders, to further their relief efforts in Darfur. When the ticket sales and additional donations were tallied, the total amount raised was $9,250! |
