UN Security council Fails to Stop Genocide in Darfur
December 1, 2004
The Representatives of the Massaleit Community in Exile (RMCE)
are deeply disappointed at the failure of the recent Nairobi
meeting of the UN Security Council to address the genocide
pepertuated by Sudanese government proxy militias against black
African civilians in Darfur. Ironically, the genocide has helped
Sudanese leaders to shed their pariah status. Sudanese leaders
regularly host key UN and Western leaders but do nothing to
stop the genocide. Sloboban Milosovic, Charles Taylor and other
murderous leaders were removed from power for war and other
crimes. President Bashir and other Sudanese leaders have killed
millions but the UN and world leaders deal with them as if
they are peace loving people. The double standards are too
blatant to ignore.
The UN stood by as the Rwandan genocide was happening. Again,
the UN is standing by as Darfurians are killed, raped and forced
out of their homes. Heartless members of the UN Security Council,
in particular China, have blocked any meaningful action against
their trading partners in Sudan. Consequently, the UN's credibility
has been further eroded. We understand why some countries choose
to act outside the UN. Passing the responsibility of stopping
the killings and murders in Darfur to the African Union (AU)
is a joke. Sudanese leaders know that stationing AU troops
in Darfur is an empy gesture of support to the victims of their
actions. Instead, it has provided a good pretext for the UN
Security Council to avoid assuming responsibility for halting
the genocide.
The situation on the ground in Darfur is precarious and will
worsen as the government and its allies in Jangaweed become
more confident that the world will not act against them. We
are not surprised by the decision of the Sudanese government
to expell aid workers. It is a logical outcome of the failure
of the world to hold the rogue regime in Khartoum to account
for crimes against humanity. 'Constructive engagement' in the
face of genocide, which undermine the very essence of international
law, encourages the pepertrators of crimes against humanity
to continue the killings and rapes. More civilians in Darfur
are expected to die or leave their homes as the relief effort
in Darfur is compromised by more intransigence by the Sudanese
leaders.
The RMCE call on the UN and world leaders to intervene to
stop the killings and rapes. We strongly believe the deployment
of an AU force in Darfur is meant to divert attention from
a meaningful international response to the crimes against humanity.

Chairman and Spokesman,
