RMCE condemns UN Commission on Human
Rights for appeasing Sudan's rogue regime (4/24/04)
The Representative of the Massaleit Community in Exile (RMCE)
strongly condemns the UN Commission on Human Rights for its
failure to take to task Sudan's brutal regime for its role
in the ongoing ethnic cleansing in western Sudan. The credibility
of this UN body is compromised by the ability of rogue regimes
to shield each other from scrutiny.
Sudan's regime welcomed the mild resolution adopted at the
meeting of the UN body on Thursday 23 April 2004. The regime
is aware that the international community lacks the political
will to take decisive measures to hold it to account for disregarding
the fundamental norms of the institution charged with protecting
human rights around the world. Government forces and their
allies in Arab militias (or Jangaweed) have displaced over
one million people internally, and forced a further 110,000
people to flee and seek refuge in neighbouring Chad. They have
murdered, raped, looted and committed other grave human rights
violations with impunity. It is almost certain that these atrocities
will continue in the absence of any meaningful action.
We call on the countries and organizations committed to protecting
human rights to take decisive action against Sudan's leaders
for targeting their own people. This is the only way to avoid
a repeat of the Rwandan tragedy.
